Swirral Edge - Helvellyn
Grade: 0.5 Length: 450m
Location: Helvellyn Ascent: 115m (377ft)
Swirral Edge is the most common route of decent from Helvellyn if Striding Edge was climbed on the way up. It offers a little scramble down a ridge that links Helvellyn with Catstye Cam, and has great views over Red Tarn to Striding Edge. As with Striding Edge, Swirral Edge can be a very dangerous place in poor weather and should be avoided when it is icy, wet or windy unless you are highly experienced. There has been a couple of fatalities recently on Swirral Edge due to people being blown off the edge or slipping and falling down. As you can see from the contours on the map, the sides are very steep and extend several hundred feet down.
